The harder question is how to create enough useful, discoverable pages that Google is willing to crawl and index them at scale.

In one B2B industrial-parts project, our team mapped roughly 12,000 viable long-tail keywords to about 800 clustered pages and rolled them out over 90 days. This was a new WordPress site on a new domain. The process combined parameter-based keyword modeling, page clustering, controlled publishing, internal linking, quality checks, and weekly monitoring.

One clarification matters: we did not build 12,000 pages. We covered approximately 12,000 keyword combinations with about 800 information-dense pages. The numbers in this article are observations from that project, not a promise that every new site will produce the same indexing results.

Why our first large-scale programmatic SEO launch failed

A year earlier, we had launched 500 pages at once for a building-materials website. Three weeks later, Google had indexed only 60. When the owner asked what had happened to the other 440 pages, I did not have a good answer.

Our postmortem found three gaps: the release cadence was wrong, the internal-link structure was incomplete, and we had no deliberate process for managing crawl demand. The pages themselves were not the only issue. We had treated publishing as the finish line instead of one step in a larger indexing system.

When a similar opportunity appeared in Q2—a new B2B industrial-parts site—we designed the process before launch. The industry had a classic long-tail pattern: buyers searched for combinations of product specifications, materials, pressure ratings, mounting options, and operating environments. An individual term might receive only 20 to 80 monthly searches, but the total number of meaningful combinations was enormous.

Step 1: Calculate the long-tail universe instead of browsing for keywords

Traditional keyword research usually starts with a seed term in a tool such as Ahrefs, followed by an export and a manual review. That can work for a few hundred terms. It becomes unreliable when a person has to maintain judgment across thousands of spreadsheet rows.

At this scale, we did not try to “find” every keyword one at a time. We calculated the possible combinations from known product dimensions, then filtered the result with search data and industry knowledge.

Build the parameter model

For hydraulic cylinders, the parameter set looked like this:

Dimension

Examples

Number of values

Bore size

25 mm to 320 mm

About 15

Material

Alloy steel, cast steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, composite

5

Pressure rating

7 MPa, 14 MPa, 21 MPa, 35 MPa

4

Mounting style

Flange, clevis, trunnion, foot mount

4

Operating condition

Mineral oil, water glycol, high temperature, corrosive environment

4

Source: project parameter model.

The full cross-product is 15 × 5 × 4 × 4 × 4, or 4,800 theoretical combinations. Not all of them represent real products or real searches. The purpose of the model is to create the complete candidate set before filtering—not to turn every mathematical combination into a page.

Filter with data, then apply human judgment

We uploaded the candidate terms to Ahrefs Keywords Explorer in batches. We removed zero-volume terms, terms with a Keyword Difficulty score above 30, and combinations that did not make sense in the industry. That left roughly 2,400 viable hydraulic-cylinder terms. Repeating the process across five main product categories produced approximately 12,000 long-tail keywords.

AI handled repetitive work such as processing CSV files, applying rules, and generating the candidate list. People handled the decisions that required product context: whether a combination was technically plausible, whether a filtered term should really become a target, and whether the difficulty logic matched the actual market.

The order is important: calculate the full space, filter it with tool data, and use human expertise for the final quality and common-sense review. Asking a person to select 12,000 terms from scratch turns judgment into the bottleneck.

Step 2: Cluster 12,000 keywords into about 800 pages

Creating one page per keyword would have produced 12,000 highly similar pages. For a new domain, that would create an unrealistic crawl and quality burden. It would also make thin, repetitive content much more likely.

Instead, we clustered terms with nearly identical intent and adjacent product parameters. Each page targeted a coherent group, not a single exact-match phrase. For example, a page centered on a 50 mm alloy-steel hydraulic cylinder could use its H2 sections to address pressure ratings, mounting configurations, and relevant operating conditions.

Product group

Keyword set

Clustered pages

Approx. compression

Primary clustering logic

Hydraulic cylinders

2,400

160

15:1

Group by bore size; cover material, pressure, and connection variants in H2 sections

Hydraulic pumps

1,800

120

15:1

Group by the primary specification and address adjacent variants within the page

Hydraulic motors, directional valves, and proportional valves

About 1,600–2,100 each

About 520 total

About 12:1

Use the same intent-first clustering principle with category-specific dimensions

Total

About 12,000

About 800

About 15:1 overall

One page per meaningful intent cluster

Source: project planning records.

This reduced the crawlable page count by more than 90% while giving each page enough information density to be useful. Eight hundred pages were still ambitious for a new site, but far more manageable than 12,000.

Step 3: Build crawl demand with controlled publishing

Many teams respond to a new domain by publishing very slowly. Our approach was different: release meaningful batches of quality-controlled pages so that each return visit gave Google something worth discovering, while increasing volume only after crawl and indexing signals improved.

We treated the rollout as a feedback loop, not a fixed calendar. The table below shows the cadence and results observed in this project.

Phase

Timing

Average daily crawls

Indexing rate

Batch size

Core actions

Launch

Weeks 1–2

20 → 35 per day

36% → 49%

50 → 80 pages

Submit sitemap, establish internal links, request indexing for selected URLs

Acceleration

Weeks 3–4

55 → 90 per day

59% → 73%

120 → 150 pages

Internal-link network takes effect; relevant industry directory links begin appearing

Stable rollout

Weeks 5–12

90 → 180 per day

87% → 90%+

Remaining approved pages

Continue only while crawl, indexing, and quality indicators remain healthy

Source: this project’s 12-week crawl and indexing records.

The increase from about 20 crawls per day in week one to about 180 in week twelve was not something we assumed in advance. It was the result we observed while using three supporting tactics.

Give every new page multiple internal entry points

Before the first 50 pages went live, we built the pillar and cluster pages that would link to them. Every new page had at least three internal links pointing to it from other relevant pages. This helped crawlers discover the URLs and prevented the new pages from becoming isolated.

Submit each batch through the appropriate discovery channels

After publishing a batch, we updated the XML sitemap and used URL Inspection in Google Search Console to request indexing for priority pages. We did not submit all 800 URLs at once. The batch structure kept the work manageable and let us review the response before increasing volume.

Maintain legitimate external signals

During the first six weeks, the business added profiles to five relevant industry directories, including ThomasNet and Europages, linked from applicable certification pages, and kept its LinkedIn company page active. These were ordinary signs of a real operating business—not mass-produced links created solely for SEO.

Step 4: Put a quality gate between generation and publication

Eight hundred pages cannot all use the same structure with only a few swapped specifications. To keep the site useful and internally consistent, we used three quality layers.

Quality layer

Control

How it was implemented

Risk it addressed

1

Category-specific information architecture

We used three page structures instead of one universal template.
